 Miss Susan Sharp Smith

“Miss Susan” (Don’t mess with Texas, as Mr. Bill says) was hired in 2004 to take the elementary counseling and guidance program in a new direction.  Her tenure has resulted in the implementation of strategic interventions to meet the domains of personal/social issues, career awareness, and academic development for the Drew Central students.  An intervention/network system for academic and mental health support services is now in place.  The elementary guidance program is in compliance with mandated state standards and actions have been taken to meet national standards.

A proponent of professional standards and ethical practices, she is currently president of the southeast region of the Arkansas School Counselors Association, a board member of the Arkansas School Counselors Association, Arkansas Counseling Association, and is a member of the Southeast Arkansas Crisis Response Team holding a national certification with NOVA.  She has made presentations at state conferences and at the local educational cooperative on school based mental health (issues and practices) and crisis response.

A Phi Delta Kappan, she holds two degrees with further study and is pursuing additional post graduate work in ESL certification.  She is a member of the Advisory Board for the school Gifted and Talented Program and the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Outside of school she attends First Presbyterian Church, is an advocate for local historic preservation, and is a board member of the SEARK Concert Association.  Her main focus away from school includes revitalizing her vintage home and grounds, and traveling whenever possible. She also enjoys being with family (especially her little niece), as well as casual and impromptu musical gatherings at her home.
